An Epidemic of Plagiarism in Indian Country
Salaried plagiarizers, and stay-at-home re-writers, have turned Indian country journalism into a sweatshop of stolen words and photos
By Brenda Norrell
Censored News
The plagiarism by stay-at-home reporters has become an epidemic in Indian country. It is plagiarism, compounded by deception. Salaried plagiarizers, and stay-at-home re-writers, have turned journalism into a sweatshop of stolen words and photos. They make sure you, the reader, do not know that they are not present on news stories.
The formula is like this. Stay-at-home plagiarizers receive a paycheck for staying home and stealing others work. They plagiarize it without permission, or rewrite it, and steal a photo from the web to go with it. Just ask Indian Country Today Media Network "reporters" if they have been present on the news stories they have been covering for the past few years.
Don't be fooled by the plagiarizers and stay-at-home reporters. Ask them if they were present on the news stories. Look at the byline and see who wrote the article. Look at the photo and find out who took the photo. Find out if the real writers and photographers were paid.
Take a look at Google News and Facebook, you'll see who Indian Country Today is plagiarizing. Search Google Web and you'll find the authentic writers. Ask who the Indian Country Today editors are and find out if they were plagiarizing when they were reporters. Ask them whether they were ever present on news stories. The reporters who were present know this.
Other websites copy and paste news without permission. If there is advertising on the page, it is illegal profiteering and a violation of copyrights. One of these websites is Native American Encyclopedia, which is violating copyrights and profiteering with advertising. The publisher refuses to respond to Censored News and identify the publisher.
These days many unemployed reporters and grassroots activists are spending the little money they have to provide live coverage and breaking news. Plagiarizers are profiteers, just like corporate profiteers, who steal others hard work for their paycheck. They are a sweatshop of stolen words and photos.
In another category, the owners of the Indian news website indianz.com in Nebraska have received a multi-million dollar US contract for domestic and international spying, with an office at the US Pentagon. Indianz.com posts the work of others, with or without permission.
One of the many problems with systematic plagiarism and profiteering from others work, is the fact that the real news is not covered, and remains censored, because of the agendas of fraudulent media sites.
Please support authentic journalism and the hard work of those out there spending their last dimes to provide you, the readers, with news.
Best, Brenda Norrell

Today Santa Clara, Calif 'No Honor in Racism Rally'
Sunday, November 23, 2014
Dozens of grassroots indigenous groups are hosting a ‘No Honor in Racism Rally' opposing the use of Native identity and culture as a mascot and demand an end the use of a racial slur by the Washington NFL Team. A prayer gathering, march, and press conference will be held prior to Today’ game at the Levis Stadium.
Bay Area Coalition Against Racism in Sports
Censored News
A large coalition of grassroots California Indigenous organizations and allies are holding a ‘No Honor In Racism Rally’ as part of the national movement demanding that the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell end the use of the racial epithet in the league.
In addition to #GameOverForRacism banners, signs, and speakers, planned activities at the rally also include honoring Native culture and traditions with Native-led singing, drumming, and dancing. The protest is part of a series of nationwide actions at NFL games to “Change the Name & Change the Mascot!”. that have been held at the Washington team’s away games against the Cardinals, Cowboys, Vikings, and will occur at the Washington team’s home game on December 28th.
Native activists will also be discussing the mascot issue as part of a larger resilience and fight against racism and colonialism. The rally’s speakers and messaging will connect their demand for respectful representation of Indigenous Peoples towards their current struggle for Sovereignty and Self Determination and the recognition and protection of Indigenous Rights, Treaties, Traditional Cultures and Sacred Lands.
"We are not created as mascots for the public consumption. We are 154 distinct Indigenous sovereign nations in California, more than any other state. Today we stand together in protest of the mascot images of our people, along with human rights activists and others who believe Native Americans deserve the right to determine how our culture and identity is represented in the media” states Chochenyo Ohlone activist Corrina Gould.
Prior to the march, Gould will offer a traditional Ohlone welcoming during a prayer gathering near Ulistac Natural Area, an Ohlone sacred site located about a mile from the stadium. According to Gould, Ulistac is actually an old Ohlone language place name— Uli being an Ohlone warrior who inhabited the area, stac meaning place/land. Following the prayer gathering, the crowd will be marching to Levi’s Stadium to hold a press conference and rally.
“We stress that by changing the name and mascot, we are working to address systematic oppression, colonialism, and racism”, stated Morning Star Gali, Tribal Historic Preservation Officer of the Pit River Tribe and co-chair of the Bay Area Coalition Against Racism in Sports. The term “Redskin” is derogatory. It refers to scalp hunting which was the basis for the wars against Indigenous Peoples across the continent into the late nineteenth century. “The offensive team name is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to ongoing racism directed at Native Americans. It's an uphill battle to carry on our ways of life in the face of pop culture myths about who we are and who we are supposed to be as Indigenous people today.”
“The NFL leadership cannot continue to ignore our voice or the fact that Native American themed mascots harm Native American youth." Student Dahkota Brown 16, Wilton Miwok tribal member added, “It is our duty to protect our identity for this generation, and the many generations to come.”
“We are people of many nations. We celebrate our rich traditions and a beautiful culture. The ways our people are portrayed in sports and media must come to an end as we are NOT a mascot nor a Halloween costume. These mascots are not neutral. They harm and endanger our youth and degrade our community.” Kris Road Traveler Longoria, an enrolled member of the Caddo Nation, Cheyenne Arapaho and Co-Founder/Co-Chair of Bay Area Coalition Against Racism in Sports and Media. Kris will be moderating Sunday’s press conference.
Over 40 years ago, the National Congress of American Indians launched a campaign against derogatory stereotypes in media and sports, eventually leading to the “Change the Mascot" campaign. “Change the Name! Change the Mascot" is a grassroots movement with wide-ranging support by state and national legislators, dozens of religious and secular organizations, plus media and sports icons including NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw, Larry King, Former NFL Coach Tony Dungy and NBC Sports Reporter Bob Costas.

A Northern California grassroots campaign is being launched by the Bay Area Coalition Against Racism in Sports. A march and rally to end the use of the racial slur, name and mascot of the NFL team from Washington, D.C. comes to Santa Clara November 23rd at 10:00 AM, Levi’s Stadium. Grassroots community members & organizations will stand in solidarity to end the use of the racial slur as the mascot and name of the NFL team in Washington, D.C. November 23rd at 10:00 AM, Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. The events will coincide with an NFL game at Levi's Stadium where the controversial Washington team will play against the San Francisco 49ers.
The campaign calls upon the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell to end the use of the racial epithet and its hurtful reminder to the Indigenous peoples of their ongoing mistreatment. The Bay Area Coalition Against Racism in Sports is organizing its largest grassroots demonstration in the San Francisco Bay Area, a continuation of many years of protesting racism in sports. Kris Longoria, co-organizer states, “The Bay Area has a large Native American Community, a lot of history for our people standing up for our rights, started here in the bay area. We are committed to our culture and traditions, but using our people as mascots is unacceptable. Let’s end this legacy of racism in sports.”
Eradicating Offensive Native Mascotry, a sponsor of the demonstrations, has issued a call for support of Native Americans, human rights activists, and others who believe Native Americans deserve the right to determine how our culture and identity is represented in media and who are concerned for the future of Native American youth. The California protests are part of a series of nationwide actions at NFL games to “Change the Name & Change the Mascot!” that have been held at the Washington team’s away games against the Cardinals, Cowboys, Vikings, and will occur at the Washington team’s home game on December 28th. Nicholet Deschine Parkhurst, Eradicating Offensive Native Mascotry member, was a coordinator of the kick-off rally against the Washington NFL team’s name at the October 12th Arizona Cardinals game. Deschine Parkhurst said, “Many grassroots groups and organizations seek to give voice to Native Americans who advocate for the Washington NFL team to change the team's name. San Francisco is a great backdrop to the November 23rd protest at the 49ers game because of the city’s historic ties to the Indigenous rights movement. The NFL leadership cannot continue to ignore our voice or the fact that Native American themed mascots harm Native American youth." Student Dahkota Brown 16, Wilton Miwok tribal member added, "Team Pride should NEVER outweigh my culture or identity, or that of my peers. It is time to end racist mascots!"
In celebration of our continued resilience and fight against racism and colonialism, we honor our culture and traditions with singing, drumming, and dancing. Traditional dress encouraged! Bring your hand drum and your poster/sign/banner!

Sheep Dog Nation Rocks on Big Mountain: Aggressive Confiscation of Dineh' Resisters' Herds

Big Mountain: Aggressive Confiscation of Dineh Resisters' Herds
**Update: Oct. 28, 2014**
This morning, Oct. 28th – 0620 hrs., Gaah’ Hopi Police & BIA Police, with guns drawn, the Begay resident in Red Willow Springs was surrounded. Main dirt road entrances were guarded by heavily armed police as well. Two teens who were niece and nephew of Etta Begay went out near the sheep corral to take pictures but cops put guns to their heads, and were handcuffed and released at the end of confiscation of the sheep and goats. Etta and her brothers were forced back into their house and police surrounded that house. Nearly 100 sheep and goats were taken but it has been assumed that the police did not have enough room for the 40 more sheep and they were left behind. The situation between non-Native supporters (only ones who acknowledged this resistance against corporate America’s genocide), Dineh elders and the BIA ordered invasion is getting more intense and may get volatile.
